JGA Scholarship Recipients named
Four more outstanding high school graduates have been added to the prestigious Junior Golf Association scholarship list.

Each of the scholarship winners receives a one year $1,500 stipend to the school of their choice. The awards were based on academics, citizenship (participation in other programs outside of golf), and participation in the JGA.

Winners of the John Block scholarship were Nathan Werme, from Portage Northern and Marah Klose, from Portage Central.

Bethany Matecun, who attended Comstock High School, won the Heidi Krum Memorial JGA scholarship, while Justin Borr, Portage Northern, was the recipient of the Jim Roschek award.

Both Werme and Borr plan to attend the University of Michigan.  Klose will continue her education at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, while Matecun plans to attend the Grand Valley State University Honors College.

The four winners were chosen from a field of nine applicants.

This brings to 41 the number of scholarships awarded with an expenditure of $55,000 since the JGA Scholarship program began in 1997.

John Block is a former Gazette sports writer. Jim Roschek was a longtime director of golf for the Kalamazoo Municipal Golf Association and was instrumental in the founding and running of the JGA.  Heidi Krum was a golf professional at Grand Prairie and was director of the JGA for many years.

Scholarship Fundraising Drive
The Junior Golf Association was established in 1987 with the purpose of providing quality golf experiences for area juniors at affordable rates. Early fundraisers by Jim Roschek and John Block laid the foundation for the JGA Scholarship Fund. In recent years, the JGA has supported all tournaments, instruction, administrative costs and Scholarship donations solely on entry fees. In order to expand programs, offer more Scholarships and keep entry fees low, it’s time to ask for your help.
