1992 Player of the Year
Mattawan's Wilcox ending
brilliant prep golf career Kelly Wilcox is winding down a brilliant prep career, but there are still a few more challenges ahead before she puts her golf clubs away. Wilcox, a senior at Mattawan High School, was recently named Junior Golf Association Player of the Year. "She was chosen because of her attitude, participation and performance," says Heidi Krum, Grand Prairie Golf Course professional, who coordinates the JGA program. Wilcox won all three JGA events in which she participated. She's now winding up her high school career on the men's varsity team at Mattawan. She and her teammates will be competing in the regional tournament Friday at Lake Doster. Mattawan doesn't have a women's golf team, that's why Wilcox is allowed to play with the men. She has to play off the same tees as her foes, but she says that doesn't bother her. "Outside of being a little longer, I don't find it much more difficult," Wilcox says. "Most of the tournaments I played in during the summer were played on courses just as long." Wilcox was on the junior circuit last summer and played in 11 major tournaments, traveling from Pinehurst, N.C., to San Diego, Calif., and points in between. Wilcox is the No. 2 player on the Mattawan team, carrying an average of around 45. That would be a lot better except for a horrible round in a recent match at Marywood in Battle Creek. In addition to golf, Wilcox tries to live her high school lift to the fullest. She loves to compete and is a member of Mattawan's women's soccer team. She also plans to try volleyball again. "I played volleyball as a freshman and sophomore and I'd like to try again," she says. "I like soccer for the action and because it's a team sport." But right now her concentration is focused on Friday's regional at Lake Doster. The JGA Player of the Year is awarded to the individual who has shown outstanding abilities based on the following criteria: participation in events, scoring average, order of finish in each event, competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
